The cyclone is expected to intensify to a category four storm off the WA coast, before crossing the coast as a category 3 system over the tourism town of Denham in Shark Bay, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Tropical Cyclone Narelle will have travelled more than 5,500km (3,400 miles) by the time it approaches Perth.

Earlier this week, some forecasts suggested the capital of Western Australia could be in the path of the system. More recent forecasts had moved the cyclone’s path further north and east of Perth, but the city could still see significant daily rainfall of roughly 50mm on Friday and Saturday.
